Contrary to popular belief, the United Nations' recommendations for the development of 3rd world agricultural sectors' focus more on the construction of effective governmental infrastructure than on the employment of a "technological silver bullet" (GE crops). In fact, the United Nations recoomends that, "national Governments, in cooperation with farmers’ associations, nongovernmental organizations and other stakeholders, should play a proactive role in promoting organic agriculture and trade".

Though not excatly on par with something as succinct as a hartwick Criterion, David Suzuki is well written: "Quite simply, sustainability means living within the earth’s limits."

In support of Cynthia, overconsumption is the chief enemy of sustainability, according to David Boyd.

An infromal workgroup of the European Union's top scientists suggested that the major drawback of genetically modified food is cultural unwillingness to accept it; the workgroup suggested that continuing research be applied to ease public concerns.

The maxim of the social sciences is definately, "good data is hard to find." Legitamite scientists are starting to agree with us, though.

The 2002 Halifax Session on Food program challenges made a recommended a "[...]communication plan from the scientific community on the real versus perceived risks," in reference to GMOs.

All the federal government seems to have done to date for GMOs is issue a proclaimation that we need better regulations and monitoring.

The jury is not yet in on the result of WHO's research on the effects of GMOs.

WHO did do a comprehensive report on the safety implications of GE foods released last December, but the result were relatively inconclusive, though more comprehensive national monitoring was a unanimous recommendation. However, I must finish reading this later tonight.

GM crops are being grown in 13 countries and tested or developed in dozens more.

FOR:
  • They could significantly increase yields and raise incomes, lifting people out of poverty and providing food security

  • Health benefits, such as extra vitamins, can be engineered in

  • They could help farmers cultivate marginal land prone to drought or salt

  • They could help the environment by reducing the need for herbicides and pesticides

  • They benefit corporations and western shareholders

  • AGAINST:
  • May be unsuitable for poor farmers who could become locked into a technology they cannot control

  • Expensive: could force farmers into debt and prevent them saving seed

  • Land reform, manure and traditional breeding techniques could deliver more benefits

  • Many claims are exaggerated or unproved. Reduced use of chemicals is debatable.
