Once in a while I will get a call from someone who begins 'I want to eat food the way God made it, and avoid genetically modified foods. Tell me what I can eat'. I can only tell them I don't know for sure how God made our foods and how each might have changed, whether by human or natural or divine intervention, in the meantime. What is certain, though, is that almost all our basic food sources, including microbes, crops, and animals, are substantially different, genetically and culturally, from what they were even 2000 years ago.
