Frankly, if i were a strategist for Monsanto, I would have engineered single-generational canola seeds. It only makes sense.
Monsanto wants to ensure that anyone using its GM seed is purchasing new seed every year (it wants a continual revenue source). One of the more potent scientific criticisms of GM crops is the potential for cross-breeding of the supercrop with some other plantlife, causing unpredictable environmental damage. And, Saskatchewan farmers would be stuck with any of this lawsuit business since single-generational seed cannot contaminate next-year's harvest.
Why wouldn't Monsanto be able to manufacture single-season seed? Monsanto has the scientific dexterity to make roundup-immune Canola, it should be able to extend its knowledge to manufacturing a product that protects Monsanto's investment.
