When genetic engineering was first an issue in the popular press, a general reporter for the local newspaper interviewd me. She was sent to do a story on local scientists conducting research in genetic engineering, I was merely on of her interviewees. After she explained her objective and that she had no scientific background whatever, I assured her she could ask for clarification whenever I said something confusing or of particular interest. Well into the interview I was talking about our method of generating transgenic linseed. One of the genes we had available at the time had been isolated from a mouse. In standard but casual scientific parlance, I mentioned that we had taken a gene from a mouse and were attempting to put it into the linseed plant. After droning on a few minutes, I had noticed her eyes had glazed over in a manner different from most people pretending to understand. I stopped to inquire, she said quite simple, quietly, "...poor mouse...". Puzzled, I said "What? What poor mouse?" She replied, a little more assertive this time, "The mouse you too the gene from. You deprived it of a gene. How is it getting by without its gene?"
