So, I lent Leah this book, Naked Pictures of Famous People.
"Hey Leah, when you need a break from all those dry history books, pick this up--it'll take you ten minutes to read: absolute garbage, but funny."
She couldn't make it through the second essay, she was so offended.
It's true, the reviews are a little deceiving. "brutally witty'," it is not. In fact, the book is indeed absolute garbage. But what got me was the absolute contrast between our readings. I had given it a little too much credit. For two reasons: 1) I watch the Daily Show every night--and I am a Jon Stewart fan; and, 2) I had this friend in High School who always had something smart to say, but lost himself in attempting to be funny.
From my perspective, the book fails on these criterion: 1) it requires a familiarity with the character of the author if you are to walk away without an angry lettre to the publisher; and, 2) it seems to make more sense if you discount the brutally offensive stuff in the same manner you would discount my High School friend's attempts at humour.
At any rate, Leah had some smart criticisms and we argued at length before I ceded to her linguistic superiority. The truth is, as Leah argued, there is not enough substance to justify the shock techniques employed in the book.
Sadly, any non-partisan reading (ie: anyone not a massive Daily Show fan) will most likely fall in line with Leah's reading.
*sigh* I will post a new quote as soon as I finish The Coyote Kings of the Space Aged Bachelor Pad (which is starting to be more of a chore than it seems worth--my confidence in book selection is shattered for the time being).
